Officer Safety & You

Officer Safety & You

It’s past time for officer safety to be a primary part of the law enforcement culture. The new Street Survival Seminar addresses this head-on by examining from the outset how law enforcement officers actually lose their lives. We address the “Fatal Four” the most common causes of deaths in our profession: felonious assaults, roadway related, heart attacks, suicide.

In a recent Bulletproof Warrior seminar we taught, Lt. Col. Dave Grossman talked about being prepared in mind, body and spirit. He challenged all to self-assess: Are you truly prepared on all levels to survive this profession and live a long and productive life?

Check the stats for this year on www.ODMP.org and note two things: 1) the majority of deaths aren’t due to felonious assaults and 2) not all law enforcement deaths are listed on that site, only those that occurred on duty. What about off-duty issues often ignored culturally—heart attacks and suicide?

We chose this profession. We need to face the music. Ultimately, officer safety comes down to each of you.

Stay safe!
