MASTER POLICE OFFICER

Summary

General Description

Provides specialized professional law enforcement skills by giving service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, preventing crime, suppressing disturbances, investigating criminal offenses and arresting offenders; trains subordinate officers and assumes supervisory status as assigned.

Duties

Typical

  • Works under general supervision of a police sergeant or lieutenant
  • may function as a patrol officer, criminal investigator (which may include conducting criminal investigations, processing crime scenes, conducting surveillance, and providing a plain-clothed officer presence), crime prevention officer (which may include community-oriented policing, developing and presenting educational programs, conducting security surveys, and providing crime prevention information to members of the university community) or field training officer
  • assumes supervisory responsibility in the absence of the sergeant or lieutenant or when functioning as the highest ranking officer
  • performs administrative work as required
  • patrols property under the jurisdiction of Texas A&M University in Brazos County by car, bicycle or on foot
  • takes reports and performs preliminary investigations
  • enforces all criminal laws and violations of the Transportation Code of the State of Texas
  • reports all violations of the rules and regulations of Texas A&M University
  • provides assistance to the public whenever possible
  • prevents crime, suppresses disturbances, issues citations and testifies in Justice of the Peace Court as well as County and District Courts and student judicial hearings
  • guards and transports prisoners
  • interacts with the public by day-to-day contact
  • responds to emergency calls and takes appropriate action
  • provides assistance to other law enforcement and community departments or agencies
  • safely operates and properly maintains departmental vehicles
  • performs other duties as assigned

Detailed initial instruction and frequent review of subordinate Police Officers.

Education and Experience

Required

  • High school graduation or GED
  • 45 college credit hours from an institution of higher education or equivalent (Each year of continuous experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer in the state of Texas and/or each year of active duty in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces may be substituted for ten (10) college credit hours
  • A maximum of 30 college credit hours may be substituted, with a minimum of 15 college credit hours from an institution of higher education is required)
  • Five years as a licensed Police Officer in the Texas A&M University Police Department

Preferred

Bachelor’s degree

Licenses, Certificates or Registration

Required

  • Must possess the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) advanced certification
  • Must have a State of Texas class "C" vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment

Preferred

TCOLE master certification

Equipment

Typical

Use of a variety of police equipment that includes radar units, personal computers, photographic equipment and mobile radios

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population
  • Must be in excellent physical health and stamina
  • Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Other Requirements or Other Factors: New hires must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background and credit history
